The BCM monitors the door and cargo switches and it decides to turn the lights on for you, and to also do that slowly dimming to off function for them.
I know nought about electrical stuff but the CLP/SSM does the heavy lifting when it receives a signal from the BCM, note the relays inside the CLP/SSM.


It was these that made me ask for the unit to be studied in use before the cover was put back on. Taking notes of the part numbers it might be possible to identify the purpose of some of these parts. The unit is not a mystical box and simple repairs can be made.I would take a guess and say the little black box in the top left corner is a timer/fade switch.
