Check the ground cable first, it's much less expensive.

If you have an ohm meter, connect it from the positive (+) battery terminal to the engine.
It should read 12.1-12.4 volts or so.
( you can also use a 12v test light for this )
Wiggle the ground cable and see if the reading/light fluctuates.
