The light must not come on as that would be an immediate fail.
But you know all this.
I am talking about Canada, it may apply to many States as well.

Question is, will a code set when repeated signals (cold start/hot run/stop cycles) that the pollution control isn't working correctly when cold? A test of this would be to pull its plug for a few cold start/hot run cycles, and see if any (MIL/lamp) or code(s) sets. Sometimes, the lamp waits a preset number of 'pending' conditions before a code sets off the dash lamp. Not familiar with the symptoms of the air pump setting a lamp or codes on our XF's. On my 02 Camaro, if the air pump goes a 'Check Engine' lamp hits the dash (this I know because I had to then buy one and replace the bad one). If it does set a lamp off, and a code, it will show up and fail emissions testing. Remember also that if you 'clear' codes before an inspection, it resets all the emission monitors until the predetermined 'drive cycles' reset those monitors. A monitor that is not reset after a code clear, will also fail in those states that have that as test criteria. Also, no idea what else might be 'trimmed or readjusted' in engines fuel/air ratios to (possibly) compensate for the pump not running.
