Sam, if the transmission hasn't had a fluid and filter change I'd suggest you start with this service. New fluid, new filter and new connector plug can make a world of difference in shifting smoothness for reasonable cost.
As long as your doing the oil/filter change, spend the bucks to do the plate/connector as well. This way, if the oil/filter didn't fix your issues, the plate with the connector should. It'll save you another oil servicing as a minimum and will eliminate the plate/connector issue as well. That's my $0.02 worth!
