1) You can turn the car to the off position as long as you don't take it out of the cylinder it will be ok.

See post #1 "UPDATE" - you can do it in a couple hours or take it to a good mechanic (not the dealer) and they can do it for a couple hundred instead of $1200 at the dealer like 180 says
