Should ask if they are able to pull codes. When I look at a car is the first thing I do.
All you need is an Android tablet or smart phone, a $12 OBD-II mini (for knee room) dongle
(one of many similar), and the $5 Torque Pro app. The codes can be found online or at the end of the factory service manual you can download here.
I consider it an essential tool.
