Default Fuel Pump Question

My 2004 coupe has 36,000+ miles and is running strong since I've taken care of all the normal XF bugaboos (many thanks to this site). As an ex-pilot, I'm kind of a maintenance freak. I keep my cars a long time, and normally replace the water pump, fuel pump, timing belt (and any other items that are known to be weak in that particular model) every 5-6 years or 50-60,000 miles. I know you may think this is crazy, but I can afford it and I enjoy doing it myself. I bought my XF six years ago, but haven't touched the fuel or water pump even though the car is 13 years old. It's not a daily driver. I've heard that fuel pumps exposed to the environment (like the one in the XF) don't last as long as in-tank types, so I'm beginning to wonder about the one in my XF which is 13 years old old but without high mileage. I'd like to hear from XF owners about any problems they've had (or have not had) with the fuel pump (or water pump).
