Yes insurance should be the solution but I'd check first with a windshield technician or service. Because it may be (at least for a while) solved for not too much. The reason I'm saying this is that I had an issue like this on Jetta couple of years ago and of course I called the insurance. Their resolution was a repair not a replace. The windshield is still there, the chip is less visible and it didn't increase. But the issue is still on my insurance record and it seems that even when I change insurance they still consider it (although was not my fault). Now, looking in retrospective I think I should have solve it w/o calling the insurance. If at least would they have change the windshield, but they didn't. The insurance I was using by then was Progressive.
