How could I best check for a faulty cat or plugged exhaust please? Most posts seem to suggest the engine would idle, but not well.

The internet suggests vacuum tests after the engine is running. Since I can't get the engine running all I can find is a suggestion to loosen the connection upstream of the cat to see if the engine will then run.
