This provides protection for up to 150K miles... (I would change it sooner than that though). You do not want the additives to become depleted.
I am not to sure of these facts but distilled water is more corrosive than your average tap water from what I remember, tap water is not to be used in batteries though.
Maybe someone can fill in the necessary details.
