I do not know if fuel coming out of the canister is related to changing the fuel filter. The fuel filter on the xfire is also a fuel pressure regulator and check valve. Best to use OEM part A 002 477 30 01 filter. There is also a check valve in the fuel pump.
I would think fuel at the canister would cause a DTC, diagnostic trouble code; you should connect a scan tool and check. It should help narrow the possibilities as to where the problem originates.
