Exclamation Random engine shut off. Dealer says $5k fix. What to do?

I have an '04 Limited, ~68k miles, manual transmission. Car is in excellent condition and has been garage kept since '04. Brand new battery. Just after getting going from a red light, the car shut off and all the dash lights became illuminated. After some time, the car would restart and drive...only to shut off at random again and refuse to restart (until several hrs later).

So we:
- Replaced the camshaft position sensor
- Replaced the fuel filter
- Resoldered the relay module

No luck. Took the car to the local dealership for assessment. Was just told the ABS Control Module ($1,500) and the main Engine Control Module ($3,200) need to be replaced (!!!$$$!!!). Dealer says the crankshaft sensor is fine (according to the forums, this is sometimes the culprit in situations like this).

- Has anyone had any luck with used parts in a situation like this?
- What about SLK parts compatibility? Any info on this that might be helpful?
- Thoughts on seeking a second opinion elsewhere?

Advice welcome. Desperate here.
