There have been no issues or work done on the car in the last 3-4 months.

I am reading past posts but nobody appears to have written up a solution to this issue.

I am aware of the manual override, but what will that do than allow the car to be moved to a repair centre?

I am still reading, but would welcome tips on what to do next.

done some more reading:-
1. Brake switch faulty....is this a common problem?
2. Dead battery....car cranked and started with no problem, so probably not the cause.

many thanks
The manual override will let you drive the car indefinitely as long as you keep using the override.
The lock is adjustable and can be readjusted, you just have to see it first and see what is the problem. We cannot see it so any answers given are just options.
Look in the Service Manual downloadable from this site.
