Default 2005 crossfire won't start

Battery went dead and would not charge with battery cables on battery. Removed cables and battery charged fine. When I put cables back on the battery all the lights came on (head lights, tail lights ect.) also the radiator fan started running. There was no key in the ignition.
When I put the key in and tried to crank the car the starter turned but would not engage the flywheel. What is going on and where do I need to start?
