Default check engine light on - P0335 Crank sensor

Strange day today, drove the Crossfire about 20 miles round trip, couple of short stops, some traffic, got it nice and warmed up.
Went home, car sat for somewhere between 1-2 hours and then wouldn't restart. Cranks like crazy but not even trying to start. The fuel gauge was on E but above the red zone. Seems like there was fuel but just to be sure I drive another car to the station, get gas in a jerry can, drive home and add about 4 gallons. Turn the key and it fires right up. At this point I notice the check engine light and read the crank sensor code..

So, did the motor heat-soak the crank sensor and then cool off enough when i went for gas? or is my fuel gauge possibly reading too high and I actually was empty? In hindsight I should have tried to start the car again when I got back home from getting gas(before adding any).

I will try to replicate the drive cycle tomorrow and create a crank/no start again. this time will cool the crank sensor with compressed air and see if it will start.
