I believe you're experiencing the problem CL770 fixed with his DIY Climate Control Fan Speed Repair. The conditions you are describing are exactly the conditions I am experiencing on my 2007 Coupe. I hesitate to do it again because of the nightmare of aligning those 2 square plastic shafts on re-assembly.
I had my radio/CD bezel out already so I took out the control. I did not find that the plug would go in much farther by filing a groove as outlined in step #1.
I filed of the little button that keeps the board inside the housing.
I will epoxy the two boards together, if it will make any difference we will have to wait and see, fingers crossed. 🤞
