Epoxy added to the boards, and the control reassembled. The ***** do not have to be removed but you must keep the ***** in the same position as when you took it apart as the square shafts on the control must fit in the square holes of the shafts that remain in the dash.
Now to assemble and test, aligning the holes as ala_xfire said it is a beech, it took me 10 minutes last time.
Update
It took me two minutes this time, I got lucky.
I can select any fan speed and vent position I want and there seems to be no delay. The test may come when the car is hot inside until then I can say the problem is solved, thanks to CL770.
Edit
The AC worked fine when the car was hot inside, the problem was solved it would appear.
