Was the CEL (check engine light) off when you picked it up?
If yes, your mechanic has cleared the codes and wants you to "cycle" the car several times to see which codes will return. Some codes take several start/stop/trips to set and/or clear. You have been asked to run the cycle a number of times so the mechanic can start with a fresh information.
