The smaller one is the REST pump - it circulates residual warm water in the engine through the heater core if you press the 'REST' button with the ignition off.
This is a MB feature to keep the car warm for a short period while you are out.
The system will automatically shut off if you turn the key in the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position, after approximately 30 minutes, or if the battery voltage drops.
