since you're a new owner and don't know the history of the car it is possible that someone has removed the a/c control head at some point and when reinstalling they didn't get the "rod" seated back into the hvac housing properly. this is a common issue. you can verify it's connected by switching the output between panel, floor, defrost etc and feeling with your hand if air is coming out the appropriate vents. if the air just stays on one setting no matter what the position then it's safe to say the rod isn't inserted into the hvac housing. it's a fix that doesn't require any parts, just some patience.
