Well, my 04 spoiler is plastic (or composite). It too had some weirdness so I removed it and had it painted by a professional. It's such a small piece the cost was minimal. Really if you're not overly particular and want to do it on the cheap you can buy the paints and supplies yourself and get an acceptable result. You'll just need to do some research on painting with spray cans.
