Well, it would indeed appear to be the differential. There is a thread on Benzworld about it happening to the slk. Our dealer who we are really pleased with, has agreed with us that it is making the said noise. The question now is, should it be changed now or when it fails?
I had the same problem two years ago. Do not let them put off swapping out your rear end, do it now, not when it fails...
