That is the electric locking mechanism that is intended to prevent the convertible trunk from being opened while the top is being raised or lowered. This mechanism has been troublesome in recent years and can make opening the trunk impossible. You are not to worry, because the mechansm has been removed from its mounting, and can't cause problems now.
