While in uniform, depending on the mission, many regulations were waived BUT in no instance were civilians allowed to mix with cargo of that magnitude (tied down in an open fuselage) unless it was an evacuation mission. The spare engine was ferried on the exterior of the aircraft on a designated pod. Inboard of the left engine if I remember the photos correctly.

I will see if I can dig up a picture or two.
