The ONLY reason the manual says to do the 'relearn' in a set pattern, IN MY OPINION, is to provide a sequence to its setup. I have seen posts of ppl who have all 4 rim/tire sizes the same (or 18's front & 19's rear OEM), and when they rotate the tires there is no problems with the TPMS working properly.

Would seem to make sense to me. I've got a 2012 Ford Fiesta SE Hatchback and the local Ford dealer performs a tire rotation every time I have them do an oil change. Either they are executing a "re-learn" process (doubt it) or the TPMS Module automatically adjusts since all the wheel sensors are the same. I also had a new set of tires recently installed by Discount Tire and I doubt they re-installed the tires in the exact same location. And since I watched them perform the work while sitting at the shop window in the lobby, I didn't see anyone perform any type of "re-learn" process with a scanner.
