They are plastic of course but you say yours is chrome and the way to get that normally is with an overlay as stated by James1549. An overlay should be able to be spotted, I do not know if they can be removed but if they are it would be better to do so. Then the OEM finish could be painted with a primer, a top coats do a clear coat if needed.
I am not sure if the OEM finish is applied in mould or later, I suspect an in mould finish just like the console bezels.
The only real suggestion that I can make is that you install the finish trim properly or it will come off and in the rear view mirror you will see it run over by the cars behind you.
