It’s probably not first gear, it is probably second gear.. The cari is in limp mode.
It is possibly a solenoid in the transmission.
~ I tend to agree with 180 above on the car being in LIMP mode. Several things can put one in limp mode as well.
~ It is possible that a liquid spill took out the console shifter module ...that's what was wrong with one of mine plus the leaky transmission harness seal.
