If there is no record of a brake fluid replacement or you've never had it replaced, replace it now. I couldn't do it myself on my car as I don't have the equipment to do it right or an ability to safely raise my car and get under it. It's not cheap paying someone to perform maintenance but regardless of the # of miles on the car, brake fluid attracts water and you don't want the brake system rotting from the inside out. These cars are getting OLD. Same thing with the engine coolant... the anti-corrosion properties of coolant break down over time and if not changed you can have an engine rotting from the inside out even if it has less than 50K on the clock. Paying for maintenance is expensive on these cars but it is way cheaper than dealing with the major problems that can surface if it is not performed, or a new car these days for that matter.

Personally, I'm working through the vitals (other than oil that is a no brainer) 1 or 2 at a time on my inherited 2004 with 55K on the clock that was under the typical maintenance schedule based on miles and not years. I got it last year. Did coolant and brake fluid last year. This year is transmission fluid and filter. Next year will be the steering fluid and rear diff lube. Then I'll have all that behind me for many years and my wife can hot-dog in it to her heart's content.

Yeah, somehow MY XF ended up being HER XF. No idea how that happened but that's OK... She deserves it as a daily driver after all the years she drove MY Fords!
