Default KEY-fob question

~ Concerning specifically the "ruby" lens on our key fobs.
~ Did I read somewhere here on the forum that the ruby lens of our key fobs controls the frequency of the radio signal to lock and unlock our crossies? The reason I ask is because of the four fobs that I have for my 4 xfires, one, (the oldest one) has been dropped causing at least half of the "ruby" lens to break off. The result is that I am no longer able to remotely lock or unlock the door without inserting the key stem into the lock. The key will start the car still. A locksmith buddy wanted to argue and said that he has seen fobs (for other cars) open the locks without a lens.
~ Do I need a complete new fob for that car?....Thanks in advance.
.....~ side note~..I did an experiment once, where I was purposely out of range of the xfire fob to lock or unlock the doors by retreating from the car until the fob was no longer in range..then I placed the fob under my chin and pressed the button to unlock, and it worked...removed from under the chin and it did not work. Can anyone explain this? Did brain waves intensify the signal ?
