Isn't it mainly Johnson Controls the main manufacturer these days? Yes it is just luck of the draw and you are basically buying the warranty. The original parts almost always last longer except for the RCM and crankshaft position sensor. The first set of tires always last longer too!
Last time I looked at a list of US Manufacturers of Automotive Batteries (lead acid type), I found the following:
1) Johnson Controls / Milwaukee, WI
2) Exide Technologies / Alpharetta, GA
3) Continental Batteries / Dallas, TX
4) East Penn Manufacturing / Lyon Station, PA
