If I remember from others, the 3rd brake light is a sealed unit & has to be sent out for repair. Don't remember where you send it, but I'm sure someone with 1st hand knowledge will chime.

It is better I think to replace the whole licence plate fixtures, and get rid of the lens that will crack if you tighten the screws all the way. This is the fixture part # A 036 545 11 28 they are available on eBay.

They can also be used to replace the trunk light with no modifications.
