It is more than likely that the shift lever was disassembled and then re-assembled WITHOUT compensating for the off-center preload.

here is an excerpt from the Paddle shifter kit instructions (which I wrote : ) that covers this

"As you re-install the four (4) screws that hold the shifter top on, be aware that internal shift lever preload will tend to make the top half of the shifter want to settle to the driver’s side during re-assembly if not positioned in “D”. So, it is best if you put the shifter in “D” before you tighten the securing screws AND line up the securing screws with the indentations they made (in the plastic) during the original assembly process (as a reference for proper positioning)."
