My original sec. air pump must have stayed on too long at some point and was burned out and I found one that is supposedly for a Mercedes of that era with the same engine specs and a part no. just one digit off. Fits perfectly. I replaced the module you spoke of (which had been replaced before about seven years ago) and everything seems back to normal. Fingers crossed it all holds.Thanks so much for responding and sharing your virtually equal situation! Actually, I am glad I didn't bother with a mechanic because I probably saved a real chunk of change.

Good job! I actually tried to rebuild my burned smog pump but it was beyond salvage. It was melted pretty bad inside and carbons were lost also. It seems once it overheats its gone.
