The Bell Laboratory Transistor Water Tower.
This three legged historical landmark was made to celebrate the invention of the transistor. It is located in Holmdel, NJ near the "Bell Works" complex.
The transistor was invented at the Bell Labs location in Murray Hill, New Jersey. The actual transistor used in the discovery experiment is on display in the small museum at the Murray Hill location.
The transistor was invented in 1947 by William Shockley, John Bardeen, and Walter Brattain. Bell Labs (AT&T) realized how important the transistor was as it was more dependable than the vacuum tube and was cheaper.
AT&T replaced its vacuum tube with new devices, allowing clearer conversations with less static. This transistor became a huge piece of the integrated circuit and of the computers and mobile devices we use today.
Bell Works is now a huge complex and residential area and open to the public.
Also on the property is an abstract sculpture mimicking the configuration of the first radio astronomy array, used on this very spot in the 1930s by Karl "Father of Radio Astronomy” Jansky.
