I found the problem. It was really quite simple. Once I noticed where the push button switch just below the door latch, I pressed it, and EVERYTHING broken was fixed. I looked at the door sde of the latch, it's missing a "bezel" or trim piece that ordinarily pressed the button in. My door button is not getting pressed. eBay $15, got a pair off of an SLK320. The one in the picture is on ebay as a Crossfire part. I'm pretty sure it's the same thing.
