Default Re: fuel door replacement

Fuel door issue, not fully covered as far as I can find:
Washed the car last night to get any road salt, etc., off it from driving after recent snowfall. As I refilled the tank, I wiped down the excess water. All was well.
This morning, saw the fuel door was open. Tried to close it, it wouldn't latch. My thought was there was water someone in the mechanism which froze, opening the fuel door and keeping the latching mechanism from moving.
I moved the car into the sun, and when I got out, the fuel door was latched. It is latched so well, it will not open. I'm planning to give it a couple hours in the sun, our expected high temperature is in the 50s today, so if ice is the problem, it should be cured.
I did not know the fuel door could latch on its own.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?
