I have had similar results over the years, but mine is often mixed with water and looks like a yellow sludge floating on top.
After removing from the car I will blow brake cleaner through the catch can and then compressed air before re-installation.
When cars come up for sale, first thing I look for in the engine bay is an oil catch can. Tells me a lot about maintenance and the condition of the engine right off the bat.
