Default Must replace 2 tires if you replace 1?

I must have the worst luck in the world b/c I'm having another tire problem. One of my rear tires leaked 10 lbs of air in 12 hrs. time. The good news is, I have a road hazard policy on it - if they can't fix (free), they will replace it (also free). I'm hoping they can fix it, because I don't want to have to replace the other rear tire out of pocket. I've always heard with this type car/this type tire, if you replace one tire you need to replace the mirroring one. My question for the forum is, is that an iron rule even if the tires are fairly new - these only have 2 months and 1,300 miles on them. Would it hurt the car if I only replace the damaged one?
