Hello everyone!

My ac fan has been making noises for a while and since my car is parked under trees on a regular basis it would not surprise me if all sorts of debris was in there.
So, today I first replaced the cabin filter. Half a tree in leafs fell out of the compartment and the filter was completely stuffed up (after only 6 months of replacing it).
Now it was on to the blower motor assembly next to it. I want to take it out.
Here's what I did so far:

1.)Slide the two plastic clips aside, holding the "door" to the blower in place and siding off the door.
2.) Removing the three torx screws holding in the blower assembly.
Since the blower did not pop out yet I did the following (not sure if it is even necessary)
3.) Removed three torx screws holding in the blower resistor. They are on top of the resistor (the part with the red and blue wire attached to it)

Here is where I am having problems...I am still not able to pull down the blower resistor and take it out. It seems like the assembly is still attached somewhere but I don't know where!!
Let me mention that this is a 2004 Xfire just in case the assemblies changed on subsequent models.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I seem to recall there are FOUR Torx screws in the fan assembly.
I used a shaving mirror to see up in there as I was removing the screws.
BTW: That's the EASY part, you will find you will need 3 or 4 hands to get the sucker back in !!!

That's why I love the forum. Figured there had to be another screw somewhere I am not looking
Read a few other threads on this topic and recall they said there are only three screws. Obviously there has to be a forth holding it in!

In there he mentions the 4 T20 Torx screws.

Alright. So had time yesterday afternoon to go out and take a closer look. Got my flashlight out and a mirror and was able to see another screw right behind the blower motor resistor in a very hard to reach and awkward place. Took me a little while to get it out but the blower motor came down right after.
It didn't look rusty but there was a few old leafs heavily jammed in the blower and all around the resistor. Cleaned it out, cleaned the connections and used some WD-40 to make sure it all runs smooth. Everything works nice and quiet now.

Only thing that concerns me is how did so many leaf get into the filter compartment and subsequently the blower. Obviously the drains on the left and right of the windshield under the hood were stuffed with leafs. I am seriously considering putting a screen on top of the drain like the ones used for windows or similar where water can still run through the drain but leafs can't get in. I wonder what everyone else has done to alleviate this issue?
Granted I am parked under trees quite a bit but I'm sure others have a similar parking situation?

And yes, it is a serious design flaw that only you tree parking people have to live with.
Many have added the screen, that's a good idea.
( have you noticed that they also mis-designed the plastic cowl so that they couldn't install the drivers side grommet around the wiper shaft ?
There is a DIY by onehundred80 on here for that )

 

Noticed that a while back. What would be the downside to not having the grommet on the drivers side wiper shaft?

Also, I'd love to see what solutions my fellow tree folks came up with in regards to covering up the drain with a screen. Are there pictures on the forum? I'm not sure what I need to search for in the search function. Maybe you can assist? You have been incredibly helpful per in this thread and private messages. Thanks so much for that!! I know why I enjoy coming to the forum all the time!
