Brought my oil to an oil change place as I usually. Get it changed with my own oil and filter.

Guy comes up to me with black sludge on fingers saying my differential oil needed changing. I said this car has a sealed differential doesn't it? He said no. I said bo, I'll pass .

Was I being conned?

No, you weren't being conned, lol. There's no diff. in our diff. when it comes to removing the plug and changing/ adding gear oil. Depending on how many miles you have, it may indeed need to be changed.

Ok, confused. You say we have no differential. Yet the oil might need to be changed? I thought it was sealed.

LOL, I think he is saying that there is no (difference) in our differential & most others. You must use synthetic gear oil meeting the specification.
(But) "black smudge" on the fingers could be part of some kind of con job. Maybe do it yourself or take it somewhere else.

as stated above your differential is set up like any and all rear wheel drive vehicle . your diff is kinda sealed ,it has a breather and it uses 90-140 gear oil, it is a open rear . but use a good oil, your oil should be black, but not sludge. most of the time the rear gear oil will last 10 to 15 years well over 100,000 miles ( if u have a wave-trac limited slip unit then order oil from needswings . only a few oils work with the wave-trac.
take it to a shop , and ask them to check the differential oil and you want to see them do it because you were told it is full of sludge they will let u see it done.

What Jim said. Watch them check it. It will be a dark color but shouldn't be sludge.

Two plugs, 14mm hex. Fill plug is on the driver's side, drain on passenger. Takes about 1.6 liters. Just have it on a level surface when refilling it, all the way to the fill plug opening.

My car only has 35K miles on it but it's now 12 years old. I'm thinking I should change it just due to the time component but wanted others thoughts on if they think it's really necessary give the low mileage.

If by "change it", you mean the fluid, then YES
If you mean the differential itself, then NO, unless it is giving you trouble.

Yes; do it. Motul Gear 300 75w90 100% synthetic would be a good choice.

Huh

I haven't used it, but Lucas Oil is another great brand, and is no doubt another good choice for synthetic gear oil.

If you like Lucas, then this is the recommended rear diff gear lube....

Synthetic SAE 75W-90 Gear Oil

(FYI: I used Amsoil 75W-90 Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube in my N/A Limited rear diff)
