Default Fuel Filler Flap Problem

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else has had this fault, as I have done a search and can't seem to find anyone else mentioning this problem.
The problem is that when the flap is pushed closed, it will not stay closed.
The only way to get the flap to stay closed, is to lock the car, and I have to hold the flap closed when I lock the car, and when I unlock the car the flap pops open.

The vacuum operated pin operates ok, so I suspect it may be the flap operated button switch which may be faulty.
Any one else experience this, or know how to remove the switch?
I may just have to take it to the dealership!!

Cheers
Terry

Do you have a twist in the tether, perhaps?

+1... I had that happen to me once shortly after I got mine. It had me stumped for a while. It is the tether that is twisted. Straighten that puppy out, and life will be good again.

It's a twisted tether. Untwist it or cut it off. It's not a seperate part. Comes with a new gas cap. Mercedes part> 230-470-04-05 Filler cap $23.52 Squirrel Crusher

or maybe your gas cap is twisted within the cap, make sure the cap goes on and is lined up so the cover will close all the way without resistance,, jim

Thanks for the replies, I've finally worked it out with your help.
I was thinking the flap was more complicated that it actually is. I thought the flap was held shut even when the car was unlocked, and to release it you had to push on the cap to allow it to be released.
I had another look at it, and yes it is the tether putting pressure on the flap when it is closed.

Maybe it has got less pliable with age, but it loops as the flap is closed, and I found if it loops downwards, it puts pressure on the flap, but if it loops upwards it doesn't, I'll just have to make sure it loops up whenever I go to the Petrol Station.

Cheers
Terry

ps. to all you northern hemisphere Roadster drivers, tomorrow it is going to be 86F, heading up to 95F by Sunday, guess who will have the roof down the whole time?
