Default Anyone removed their rear bumper cover?

I need to remove my rear bumper cover and thought I would see if anyone has had any experience with this before I try to do it myself. I haven't really looked at it yet, so it may be pretty straight forward, but if any has any tricks in regards to getting it off in a somewhat easy manner, please chime in.

the body shop removed mine in the past... perhaps this may assist with the mounting and bolting points/areas...

Page 13-7 of the 2004 Service Manual provides a how-to for the rear fascia removal:

Geeze, thats pretty easy for a german car!
looks like the taillights come out then the cargo area carpet etc to get to the retaining bolts would be the hardest part.

most all bumpers have a small screw or 10mm bolt up in the wheel well right where the bumper stops and the qtr panel arch is. just follow the crease in the bumper to the 10 oclock position of the rear wheel and you will see it. might have to pull back the wheel well liner. if its there just take it out. Next look for blk plastic push pins in the bumper part of the wheel well...cant remember if there are any and its to dang cold out foe me to check. once you get that out grab the bumper up high (where that first bold was) and give it a tug. all bumpers have flanges that fit into black plastic mouldings to hold them snug. undo the rest of the fasteners as noted in the service guide.

Biggest thing with a bumper is to tug gently and look in every crevace you can see with a flashlight to make sure there isnt that one last clip holding it on. A good yank and they pop off

If you break a fastener pm me and I can mail ya some

Pooly

Thanks for the pics and the links! Nice too see it from a different perspective. I was looking at the car tonight, from what I could see, there are screws on the underside of the bumper (where you would mount a diffuser) and there are two torx screws on the top of the bumper where it meets the hatch lid. According to the illustration in the service manual are there screws on the inside of the bumper? The arrows are confusing me abit.

most likely yes, the thing that caught my eye was the bracket dealeo right below the vent box on the bottom of the qtr panel. some bumpers have bolts that hold them on in the middle/side of the bumper where our marker light would be. perhaps this may be one of them but the illusteration doesnt show it to be so. Bumpers are really easy, like a puzzle. Just start with what you know and can see and keep picking at it just be a bit careful as there are some flanges and tabs that could tear off.

again looking at the manual, it seems like an easy one to remove. You will most likely have to pull apart the rear cargo interior carpet to get to the screws. I think you can do this in about 30 min. Great luck and keep us posted if-in you have a problem

Thumbs up Re: Anyone removed their rear bumper cover?

I just removed my "rear fascia" (aka rear bumper cover), as part of my new push to install a backup camera. I didn't fully plan on removing the fascia, but when my plastic wedge fell down into it (Doh! ), I couldn't resist.

The above pictures, and the FSM were helpful. But the FSM is not very complete or accurate. You (too) must remove the rear taillights and side markers (easy). Remove the two black plastic pans first from underneath -- don't leave them installed on the fascia like the FSM shows. And there were seven screws/nuts each, not four, including one from the wheel well.

There's also two 10 mm hex head screws on each side that aren't described in the 2004 or 2006 FSM -- they go down vertically through the top of the sides of the fascia -- you access them through the taillight holes. There's also a couple of rubber strips in the wheelwells that just pull off.

My 2005 didn't have the third (just off-center, below the license plate) hidden 10 mm nut as shown in the FSM, and implied in the above pictures. Removing the center interior trim (after the right side lower and sail panels), made the job easier, and would be necessary if you have the third hidden nut.

Here's some pics. If they don't show up well (or at all), go to my gallery and enlarge them:

Have it mostly reinstalled now -- is being easy. Just make sure both lower-sides slide forward onto their brackets, and realign the fascia/body seams as you tighten the fasteners.
