I refuse to switch to a non-stock head unit
The MS8 sits after the factory amp in an oe interface situation or in use with an aftermarket headunit connected via preamp level rca connections or speaker wire.
Since you would not be feeding the unit 8 channels of input one of the input pairs can be used as an aux input from another device.
In this case you could run you sat radio in there and the ipod would be controlled by the MS8 via a hand held remote.
Or
By piggy backing the Drive +Play II into the aux you now have a more "ipod like" control **** and potential for bluetooth for your cell phone for hands free usage, optional sirus sat tuner box, use with other types of mp3 players ect.

oh so now i get it...
the head unit connects into the drive+play, as does the "ipod connection" per se.
then you can use the drive+play control unit to say if you want to listen to the audio coming from the head unit (and then feed it through the aftermarket amp) or if you want to take satellite radio or ipod.
is that right? so it sits between the factory head unit and the aftermarket amp?

That is just one way.
MS8 has an 8 channel amp in it (similar power to your factory amp) to is can connect to the head unit and then bypass the factory amp, or it can go after the factory amp.
MS8 has an ipod controller built in, but the D+P has a more intuitive interface in my opinion.
