Angry Fuel Tank Door

This is my inaugural attempt to communicate through this media, so please bear with me.

The fuel tank lid on my car comes open when I unlock the car, or when I open the door. Very annoying, as I must lock the lid by hand every time I get into the car.

Anybody know if it is a serious problem, or if it just needs programming?

Thanks,
Stan Soroken

I think if it "pops open" it needs adjustment. It should lock/unlock with the doors.

Welcome to the forums, Stan! I learn something every day here. I had no idea that that the door to the gas-fill locked in conjunction with the regular door locks. I always thought it was always opened by just pressing on it and it would pop open. Once again I've learned something new. One of the more experienced members will have to address your inquiry. I know nothing about adjusting the door.

Something similar happened to me, and I discovered that the gas cap retainage cord (cap keeper) had become twisted enough times by taking the cap off to fill the tank to actually put tension on the door so that it wouldn't stay closed. Sounds weird, I know. The plunger that actually pushes out the door and the door lock was working fine. This cap keeper was the culprit.

Hopefully that helps. If not, I'm out of other ideas.

I discovered something this morn. after I was going to close the fuel door when I finished my fill up. As I started to put the door back down my hand slipped off & it went back into place very softly by itself without having to press on the paint at the tip of the door. Over the yrs. this will save a lot of touches at that same point & could show some paint wear to some degree.

Also when I shut both my hood & tail gate I release them just as they start to begin to drop on their own & the closure is just enough to get them to lock on their own & save paint wear & fingerprints. These cars are so well balanced on door closures that I am amazed every time I close one. Even the sound is of a European closure that I have never experienced with all the domestic cars I have only owned before.
