Default My Sound System (with pics) Round 2

So if you've read my other thread, you realize I had my Infinity speaker crap out of me. So I scrapped Infinity products and bought JL Audio C5 6.5" components, a JL Audio HD 450/4 amp, and upgraded my box to a custom JL Audio fiberglass enclosure with House of Kolor Kameleon for my JL Audio 10w3. I am beyond thrilled with the results.

Did you bypass all the stock stereo connections? I am going to change my stereo "Head unit" and wonder if I can bypass the Infinity amp and hook directly to the stock speakers. Not sure of the ratings on them.

Mine is a base coupe so there was no stock amp...

However, I did bypass the stock wiring. Ran two sets of RCA cables to the trunk where my amp is: one for the door speakers, one for the sub. Then ran two sets of speaker wire from the amp back up to the cross overs, mounted behind the kick panels. Then ran speaker wire into the door and to the tweeter and mid-woofer.

If I understand what you are trying to do, I think you can just buy a new head unit and use the internal amp on the head unit to push the stock speakers using the stock wiring.... not real sure about the stock tweeters though, b/c they may take less power than the internal amp puts out on your head unit.

For instance, my tweeters only take 20 watts rms and my head unit supposedly puts out 40. My amp puts out 75, but my crossovers that came with my door speakers splits the signal. Also not sure if the stock speakers have a crossover.

Hope that helps

Uh, no, that's not correct.

Check any stereo thread in this section and you will see it is regular wires in the harness.

Very nice. I have a JL setup, also. (ZR650CSi components, 250/2, 500/1 and a 10W7) I mounted my tweeterws behind the grills, but I like the way you mounted yours on the surface. Good work.

Yeah... when I originally mounted the Infinity Kappa tweeters, they were much larger so I dremeled out the stock tweeter to have a big enough hole. When I put in the JL tweeters, it was pretty ghetto; I had to use some tweeter mounts for some old tweeters I had back in the day, to hold the tweeter mount for the JL Audio tweeters, in order to make it fit the large hole.

Thanks for the info. I think I am going to install through the stock wiring except for a sub woofer and amp, which I'll use the outs from the new head unit for. it seems to be the fastest and easiest way to upgrade. Where did you get the fiberglass enclosure? How expensive was it?

I found the enclosure on Ebay, missed the end of the auction (it didnt meet reserve), then found the guy on craigslist and got the enclosure for $275 shipped.

He custom makes these, although I'm sure a custom one would be more than $275. This one was apparently out of his own vehicle and originally had a JL Audio W7 mounted; I had to dremel out the speaker mount by about 1/3 inch so my W3 would fit.

Where did you find a place to run your power wire through the firewall? I've looked a couple times but the weather has been too chitty here(when i've had the time to actually look) for me to really search for a factory grommet. Any help would be appreciated.

Remove your battery and the tray it sits on and you will find a great spot! If you do a search, there have been a couple threads about this very topic and there are pictures posted as well.

Good luck~

TITCR - just poke a hole in the rather large piece of factory rubber and run it through. Pull back the passenger floor mat and carpet and it's right there.

Actually you just want to grab one of the nipples between your fingers and then slice it off leaving a perfectly round hole for your wire to pass through - there are a couple different sizes too...

Some ******** broke into my car and took my entire sound system, save the door speakers. Stay tuned for Sound System (with pics) Round 3.... assuming insurance doesn't screw me, I'll be doing another custom enclosure with HOK Kandy Tangerine. . . and I will be bolting everything down through the floor and covering the trunk.

For future reference you may want to know that anti-theft devices like that (Razor blades) are technically illegal - it's not OK to lay booby traps for thieves that will cause grievous harm.

I thought it would be cool to rig up something so that if anyone touched the car, they'd get electrocuted. Nope, can't do it. The law is based on the fact that someone might "accidentally" fall victim. Like say you installed your razors, forgot about them, sold the car and the new owner decided he might like to remove the amps....

I'm surprised you didn't get charged.

How ironic that we can't protect our property with deadly force when thieves can use deadly force to steal it. I guess that's what separates them from us?
