Default New Head Unit

I currently have the stock Infinity system in my '06 limited. I am currently looking to upgrade the current head unit primarily to include an external usb plug so I can just plug in a usb stick with about 4 to 5 gigs of music.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, I wanted to make sure that all the speakers will still work with the new head unit. I lack the technical knowledge on the audio stuff, so please excuse the ignorance on the subject.

Have been considering this radio for my ride even before I got the car.

Looks a little like a classic Becker. Not as fussy as the stock unit. And a USB stick slot up front.

Some of the Blaupunkt units also have this feature. Their Memphis MP66 is particularly popular with board members and is easily installed, even by Luddites

Now the hard technical stuff

The head unit in our cars is just a tuner. The amp is under the floorboards on the passenger side. Basically you're plugging into the antenna and a harness to the stereo IIRC.

That Blaupunkt is probably the closest thing I've seen soo far to blending in with the rest of the interior. All the other units stick out soo bad.

My other main concern is making sure that all the speakers still work with the new head unit..Does any additional hardware have to be purchased along with a new head unit to connect with the factory speakers, or is it all a pretty seamless install?

Hi,

I would recommend the Sony MEX-BT5000.

Car Audio Blog Sony MEX-BT5000 + Bluetooth + MP3/WMA playback

It fits nicely in the dash, is easy to install and is bluetooth. My iphone and my droid phone both sync with the bluetooth for phone and streaming music. The microphone for the phone is built into the unit so you do not need a separate microphone hanging somewhere in your car. It is highly recommended from me and I think it looks good in our Crossfire dash.

Steve

The speakers are connected to the amp. The amp is connected to the head unit (the receiver you are changing out) via a bundle of wires that leads to a white plug that goes into the head unit. Some folks call it a "harness". When you pull out the old head unit, remove the white plug and the antenna jack. When you have your new head unit, insert the white plug and antenna jack.

No need to touch the amps or speakers if you are only changing the head unit.

Some head units will require an adapter. Most reputable dealers know what our cars need connection-wise and will supply the adapter (or sell it separately).

I was thinking of making the head unit purchase from Crutchfield. They say they provide everything you would need for installation. I'm more worried about where to place the mic for the bluetooth. More of a summer project. Slowly upgrading things here and there.
