Have had my xfire two years - 6,300 miles. Started it after 5 months of storage and the FSS shows the little wrench followed by the #110. I could use some help with what it means.

It means time for oil change. The 110 is the mileage beyond recommended change.

I think it also can come on after the passage of time. My car sat on a dealer lot for a year, had 58 mi on the odo & the wrench came on. Had to be passage of time in my case, rather than miles. Wrench icon disappeared after the oil change & has stayed off through 2,300 miles.

I had a similar experience when I purchased my SRT-6 in Jan. Wrench was on, yet odometer read only 50 miles. Build date indicated that it was built in Nov 2004 so it was time that dictated this oil change. BTW the dealer also replaced all 4 tires as they had flat spotted for sitting for so long.

Speaking of wrenches...since the first day I got her (this past September 4th with 182 miles on her), a single wrench is always there. You mean I need to change the oil all this time?...and after only 4,000 or less miles? Man, I need to study the owner's manual more closely, I guess. These wrenches confuse the heck out of me... <sigh>

The single wrench is only there for a few seconds after starting her up. If I don't need to change oil, then NO wrench appears at all?

Talk about adding insult to injury...they can't move 'em and when they do, they have to replace all 4 tires!

 

I just realized something too...along with the single wrench, the figure that comes after it is a MINUS figure. Does this mean how many miles OVER the needed oil change should have occurred? YIKES My car also is a 2004 that didn't sell that first year...

 

Ok, I checked my odometer...I have 4,450 miles. A single wrench appears with a -581. Does this mean I am 581 miles PAST an oil change or does this mean I should change it in 581 miles?

BTW, the dealership gave me an owner's manual for a 2005, NOT a 2004. I need to pick up the correct manual for 2004. ::sigh::

 

A minus sign does indeed mean the car is that much past servicing. I'm not sure if it represents miles or days for everyone, but mine was definitely counting days.

It was at -59 when I bought it new, and added one for each day that passed. Until yesterday when I had my car serviced for the first time (4,200 miles), the FSS display was up to about -280. Doing the math takes you right back to the date I bought my car.

Now it reads 7,000.

 

Cissy, the minus sign means you are 581 miles PAST DUE for the service! If the wrench and a little clock icon show up that means that the service is coming due (or past due if the number is negative) in that number of days rather than miles.

 

Don't know if anyone else posted this...the 110 could also be days since it was due for an oil change. My car had less than 2,000 miles on it when the wrench came up. It always read days not miles. When I reset it after the oil change (the dealer forgot) it did reset to 7,000 miles. From what I was told it also figures (smart car?) if you don't drive your car a lot that older oil still needs to be changed? I was told the viscosity breaks down after a while, my car was a year and a half old although I've only owned it, new since July. I don't know how true that is, maybe someone can explain that. Being independently wealthy (ha ha) I decided to let them change it when they did my fan recall. The next one will be done at 5,500 miles whatever the car says.

Thanks Bobs...I had no idea. All this time...my goodness. Anyway, today we are going out to buy oil and the first dry day, oil is getting changed. YES, the clock with minus 581 shows.

I think we need to read a service manual; maybe it is switchable between miles and days - my '04 definitely reads miles and it doesn't even change at less than 100 (ie; it counts down until service mileage and then counts negative numbers up if it isn't reset. I think i'm getting the max miles out of oil changes - it's only requested three in 28k and my icon hasn't come on yet after the last one. I've found a german car specialty shop that likes the car and only charges 59 bucks for the change. It's called "Auburn Foreign Car", It almost seems like they get bored working on all the benz's, porsches, and bimmers and like the change of pace !

 

We have been talking about how expensive the oil filter is...and about a recall? Anyway, I went to New Mopar Parts website. I looked for our OEM oil filter and found this: Not as expensive as a Chrysler dealership?

Just ordered a new oil filter today from Moparpart.com. Part #5102905AB $13.12 shipped.

 

Single wrench represents A service: oil change, check all fluids, filters etc. 2 wrenches represents B service: same thing as A service with the addition of rotating the tires and probably a few more items (these are listed in the owners manual). This type of scheduling is characteristic of MB services. The FSS does need to be reset manually though (not automatic as noted before). This is also explained in the owners manual.
