Stupid Question - Oil filter gasket
Ok. I cannot believe I did this, but the gasket failed after I changed my oil. Luckily, I was on my way home from work, and only lost a little over a quart of oil...what a mess! Purchased a new filter, and I am reinstalling it; however, I am concerned about where the large gasket sits on the cap. I know, I looked when I took it off, and thought I had put it back correctly, now I am having second thoughts after the leak.
Does the gasket go in the large groove at the top of the cap or does it go into the small groove right at the top? I currently have it in the large grove and it does not seem to be leaking after a drive to the car wash and back. But I do not want a mess again tomorrow.
Any information, before I have to drive again in the morning will be appreciate.

i swear we answered this exact question (exact wording and concerns) some time ago. is this a repost? man, dejavu --
anyway, the o-ring goes right above the threads, not so high as to meet the "cap", but it should sit snuggly in the groove made for it --
good luck

Rob;
Thanks very much for the reply and link. I did try a forum search, but did not see that post. I installed the gasket correctly, and made it back and forth to work without a problem.
Cheers,
John
