Default Linear setting question

Call me dumb but ... what does the "linear" setting on the cd/radio player do?

It sets the bass and treble to flat or the zero point.

Linear adjustment (LINEAR)

The tone values for the set signal source (e.g. radio/FM) are set to 0 (mean value) -
Press and hold button AUD for more than 4 seconds.

All tone values for signal sources radio and CD are set to 0 (mean value) -
Press and hold button AUD for more than 8 seconds.

Thanks for the replies ... that has got to be the least thought out feature that I have encountered. Given the fact that you have to hold the button in and watch for the change in settings over as much as 8 seconds ... isn't it easier to just change the bass and treble to zero ?

Apparently the only useful part of this feature is that you can make the CD flat and turn down the bass in FM-land. I figured that out tonight after reading the post here. Seems to me a lot of FM stations bump up the bass.

I find the stock Becker Monza stereo kinda screwy. It tries so hard to be elegant in looks that it's difficult to operate. The Beckers I've run into in the past have been much more intuitive.

I just set a handful of presets in FM and play my CDs - roll my eyes and go on. It does have great sound.

Yet another quirky thing about what I think is a great little car...

OK first of all I know that his is a 3 year old thread but rather than starting another thread on the same topic as many others here do I want to address my question here on an existing thread.

Why does my OEM Radio/CD player often reset itself to "0" Treble and "0" Bass by itself ??

No battery disconnect or low voltage issues are causing this.
It's like using the linear button to reset but it happens all by itself when the radio is OFF and not used for a few days.

I also see this question raised in this other thread but not really clearly answered.

I suspect the answer lies in here Radio Manual PDF somewhere but it is a bit confusing.
