Talking Use of battery maintainer ???

Hi,

Jaylow will sleep for the winter. Anyone using a battery maintainer???
I have been told a trickle charger is not good as it can overcharge the battery.
Can I connect the maintainer via the lighter??? Or should I connect it directly to the battery???
Keep the battery in??? Or out of the car??? What's the issues when I put the battery back in the spring???

I'm not sure that it would work through the lighter since that doesn't work unless the switch is on. I put mine on a trickle charger occasionally if I'm not driving it at least weekly but it doesn't go much longer than two weeks without getting driven.

Go to a motorcycle store. They will be able to sell you a "smart" trickle charger that will not over charge your battery. Connect it straight to the battery. I have used these on bikes and they work great.

I've used the "Battery Tender" for years on all the cars I've kept mostly garaged in the winter and they work great. Can't overcharge, ready to go when you are and they cost around $50. Any good auto parts catalog should have it (Autoanything, California Car Cover Co., etc.).

Bought mine at Walmart for $18.00. It is a battery maintainer only charges when needed.

The Battery Tender is "da bomb". I have two of them and have used them for years. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Definitely leave the battery in the car and attach a battery charger with a floating ground. The Battery Tender is an excellent model, but there are many other's out there now that are just as good at a fraction of the cost. I put mine Crossfire in storage every year and use a floating charger that I purchased at Harbor Freight for $6.00. Since you're putting your car into storage be sure to put Stabilizer in your fuel, rubber under the tires so the don't draw moisture, and it wouldn't hurt to raise the weight off the suspension.

Thumbs up Re: Use of battery maintainer ???

I've been using the one from Griots Garage for the past 4 winters (my last car as well as the Crossfire) and its GREAT! Its got a computer chip inside of it that detects when the battery is fully charged and then turns itself off and then when needed, turns itself back on. Its a quality piece and comes with terminal clips as well as "alligator" style clips incase you don't leave it on all that long.
